Welcome to Summer Events at the Virginia Public Library!

Below are our summer events happening in the month of July and August, followed by events that will be happening weekly this summer. All our summer events will be outdoors events and will be on the front lawn of the library, or at the Virginia Market Square farmer’s market by Silver Lake. Read further to see what events we have coming up this summer!

July and August Events

July 8 – Fire Department Storytime at the Farmer’s Market – 3:00pm

This event is an outdoor storytime held at the Farmer’s Market by Silver Lake, featuring the Virginia Fire Department! Join us for to listen to stories read by Fire Department workers, and to see fire vehicles after the stories are done. This event is recommended for young children and their families.

July 15 – T-Shirt Day Crafting at the Farmer’s Market – 3:00pm

This event will show you how to turn your t-shirts into bags (no sewing required)! Bring your own t-shirt, or use the t-shirts the library has gathered (in a limited quantity). This craft includes materials that can stain clothes, so dress appropriately! This event is recommended for middle grade children and teens. Younger children may need adult help with these crafts.

July 22 – Storytime at the Farmer’s Market – 3:00pm

This event includes an outdoor storytime at the Farmer’s Market, followed by outdoor crafts and activities! Be prepared to sing, dance, and listen to some stories! This event is recommended for young children and their families.

July 29 – Police Department Storytime at the Farmer’s Market – 3:00pm

This event is an outdoor storytime held at the Farmer’s Market by Silver Lake, featuring the Virginia Police Department and Police Dog Teddy! Join us to listen to stories read by Police Department officers, and to see police vehicles after the stories are done. This event is recommended for young children and their families.

August 5 – Storytime at the Farmer’s Market – 3:00pm

This event includes an outdoor storytime at the Farmer’s Market, followed by outdoor crafts and activities! Be prepared to sing, dance, and listen to some stories! This event is recommended for young children and their families.

August 19 – End of Summer Reading Fair at the Farmer’s Market – 2:30-4:00pm

The library will be hosting a variety of lawn games, a Dunk Tank with local celebrities, and announcing prize drawing winners for summer reading on August 19th at the Farmer’s Market! Visit the library to learn more about this event, and to learn how you can earn a Dunk Tank ticket!

Weekly Events

June 8 – Aug 31 Story Strolls on the library lawn

The library will have Story Strolls displayed on the library lawn every Tuesday from June 8 until August 31. These stories are provided on large sign boards that families can walk by to read the entire book. The Story Stroll will start by the library parking lot and end near the library sign board. Visit every two weeks for a new story to read!

June 10 – Aug 26 Story Strolls at the Farmer’s Market

The library will have Story Strolls displayed at the Farmer’s Market every Thursday from June 10 until August 26. These stories are provided on large sign boards that families can walk by to read the entire book. The Story Stroll will be set up along the walking trail next to the Farmer’s Market stands. Visit every two weeks for a new story to read!

June 17 – Aug 5 – Dave & Yogi Therapy Dog – 2:30 – 4:30pm

This recurring event can be found at the Thursday Farmer’s Markets held by Silver Lake! David Kopp and his therapy trained dog Yogi will be available from 2:30 – 4:30pm for children of all ages to visit and practice their out-loud reading skills! Sign up in advance for 20 minutes with Dave & Yogi – readers will receive a book to take home after their reading appointment. Walk ins are also welcome to visit Dave & Yogi at their tent during the Farmer’s Market. Visit the library at the Farmer’s Market or at our building to sign up for your reading time!
